4 LOCAL ATHLETES TRY TO PROVE THEMSELVES

Few things get sports fans more excited than the next superstar.
Internet message boards sizzle at the mention of a prized recruit or younger player who might make a major impact one day.
No one can accurately predict every future star because injuries or off-the-field issues can get in the way no matter how talented an athlete is.
But local fans might learn a lot over the next few weeks about who to keep an eye on.
Four local boys' high school basketball players got the chance to show what they could do Saturday at the Dave Telep Carolina Challenge in Cary.
The clinic featured 80 of the top basketball players in the state, and four local players were invited. Juniors Cameron Lovelace and Justin Johnson of Cherryville, junior Lateef McMullan of Ashbrook and freshman Cory Raley of Gaston Day were all selected to participate.
A good performance there could create even more college interest, although players such as Lovelace and Johnson don't need much more. Lovelace gets at least 10 text messages a day from college coaches, and Johnson gets that many letters per day.
