OBSERVATIONS

Kings Mountain Hope Christian forward J.T. Thompson is an athlete in the Vince Carter/Dominique Wilkins mode. He can vertical leap a foot over the basket and he had several of the most jaw-dropping moves all day - including a gliding, left-handed dunk over two players. Thompson, who is right-handed, appeared to be going in for a layup - but he kept rising.

Later, he added another left-handed jam while pushed and fouled by Winston-Salem Prep's 6-foot-9, 300-pound Reggie Johnson.

Wilmington New Hanover's Ty Walker is listed at 7-foot, but he might not be quite that tall if Veritas Christian's Catalin Baciu is 7-1.

The best point guard at camp was Charlotte Christian's Damier Pitts. Easily. A two-time private school all-state star, he was one of few point guards playing under control and looking for teammates. He also hit open shots. He showed why Virginia Tech is recruiting him so hard.

You'll be hearing a lot about a couple freshman in the future: Concord Cannon's Jarrell Eddie and Rocky Mount's Tashawn Mabry, 6-5 shooting guards with range.
